Andy Samburg has become a cultural icon the past year...with the YouTube generation perpetuating the shorts that have truly put him on the map. While time will only tell if he will be the SNL comedic icon that Steve Martin, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley etc were to the generations prior to ours...tonight Andy's performance as MC for the MTV Movies Awards definitely will make an impact.
There is no question that shock value equals dollar signs. The more crude and often lude a sketch, short, joke, or sound bite is the more likely it is to run the media magazine shows, gossip blog sites, YouTube, and if you are lucky a spot on CNN's top news stories circuit. (Check CNN's top searches from time to time. It's truly amazing too see what interests our nation; Rhianna is the number one search..octuplets number 8, ironic?) If shock value and soundbites were what MTV was looking for, the dog rubbing himself, and the WTF award will definitely solidify their show's place on the tips of tongues for the week to come.
One of the most memorable, undoubtedly jaw dropping segments of tonight's show was Eminem's face between two butt cheeks. While I appreciate Eminem's immediate swagger, and undeniable talent I am not going to defend him. How can I feel bad for a person who has been climbing the charts by pulling other celebrities down in his most recent songs? Does he deserve an ass in his face for ratings and YouTube playtime in MTV's interest? I laughed at the time...more nervous laughter. I happy I'm not Sasha Baron Cohen and that the days of the hardcore rappers have been replaced by the Kanye's and Weezy's so that as mad as Eminem is there will most probably not be a shoot out..perhaps a strongly worded Tweet is in order?
In the end MTV had nothing to lose, because the reality is that Eminem needs MTV more than they need him. And know that that somewhere Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey, the Kardashians are laughing saying 'Karma is a bitch...and so was Eminem tonight.'
